STOP. THINK. Is It Really Just About the Money?.

A candid look at what to consider before jumping ship for a bigger pay cheque.

We get it — life’s expensive right now. With the cost of living pressure hitting hard, the lure of a higher salary can be hard to ignore. And for many, making a move purely for money feels like the only logical choice.

But before you hit send on that resignation letter, we’re asking you to stop and think.

At Be Recruitment, we’re seeing more candidates than ever jumping ship for dollars alone. But here’s the thing — when the economic pressure eases (and it will), will you still be glad you left?

Because while money matters, it’s far from the only thing that makes or breaks a job.

A sneak peek at the 2025 Salary & Employment Trends Survey:

We asked 80 HR leaders across the not-for-profit and community services sector what actually helps them attract and retain great people. Here’s what they told us:

  • 45.6% said their organisation’s purpose and reputation were the most effective drawcard.

  • 42.3% said flexibility (hours, hybrid options, location) came out on top.

  • Just 2.5% of HR leaders said money was their #1 attraction tool.

Let that sink in. Even employers don’t think higher pay is what keeps people.

What else should you be considering before making a move?

1. Culture fit
Supportive colleagues, good leadership, and a psychologically safe environment. These things can’t be bought — but they shape your everyday experience.

2. Flexibility and lifestyle
Being able to manage your day, care for your family, or just enjoy work/life balance is often worth more than a few extra thousand dollars a year.

3. Growth and development
Does the role support your long-term goals? Will you learn, stretch, or get stuck?

4. Job security and funding
Is that new role funded short-term? Are there redundancies looming? Ask the questions — don’t be dazzled by salary alone.

5. Values alignment
Does the organisation care about the same things you do? In tough times, shared purpose can be a huge motivator.

Final thoughts on the matter….

Yes, advocate for yourself. Ask for fair pay. But remember — when cost-of-living pressures ease, your why for going to work will matter more than ever.

Jumping for the money is easy. Landing somewhere that feels like home — that’s where the real value is.
